Best Electric SUVs in Australia

If you are shopping for an EV in Australia, chances are you are looking at an SUV. It is the most popular vehicle category in the country, and the electric SUV market has exploded with options in recent years.
Whether you need something compact for city driving or a full-size SUV for the family, there is more choice than ever. Here is how to navigate it.
Why Electric Suvs Are So Popular
Australians love SUVs. The higher ride height, extra space, and sense of practicality suit the way most people use their vehicles. Electric SUVs keep all of those advantages and add lower running costs, smooth and quiet driving, instant torque (which makes them feel punchy off the line), and fewer trips to the mechanic.
The battery pack sits in the floor of most electric SUVs, which lowers the centre of gravity compared to a petrol SUV. That makes them feel more planted and stable on the road, despite the ride height.
What To Look For In An Electric Suv
Not all electric SUVs are created equal. Here are the key things to compare:
Shopping under $50k often means trade-offs on range and spec — your loan term should match those trade-offs.
A broker can help you avoid a mismatch between how long you keep the car and how the loan is structured.
Range. For an SUV, you want at least 350 to 400 kilometres of real-world range for comfortable daily use. If you regularly drive long distances or tow, aim higher.
Boot space. Check both the rear boot and whether the vehicle has a front trunk (frunk). Some electric SUVs offer more cargo space than their petrol equivalents thanks to the absence of a traditional engine.
Towing capacity. If you need to tow a trailer, boat, or caravan, check the rated towing capacity carefully. Not all electric SUVs are rated for towing, and those that are vary significantly. Towing also reduces range substantially, so factor that in.
Charging speed. Look at the maximum DC fast charging rate. A higher rate means shorter stops on road trips. Anything above 100kW is reasonable. Some premium models now exceed 200kW.

Different lenders have different appetites for brands and ages — brokers shortcut the guesswork.
Safety. Most electric SUVs score five stars in ANCAP testing. Check for the specific features that matter to you, like autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, and blind spot monitoring.
Price Ranges
Electric SUVs in Australia span a wide range:
Sub-threshold (under $50,000): Compact crossovers and smaller SUVs—often around $32,000–$48,000 drive-away depending on model and drive-away offers. Good for city and suburban use. Brands like MG, BYD, and GWM compete strongly here.
Mid-range ($50,000–$80,000): Mid-size SUVs with longer range, better tech, and more space. This is the sweet spot for families. Multiple manufacturers compete in this bracket.
Upper / premium ($80,000+): Premium and full-size SUVs. Longer range, luxury interiors, advanced tech, and higher towing capacities. The top end of the market.

New Vs Used Electric Suvs
The used electric SUV market is growing as early adopters trade in and fleet vehicles come off lease. Buying used can save you a significant amount, especially on models that have been on the market for a few years.

How To Finance An Electric Suv
Whether you are buying new or used, for personal or business use, there are finance options to suit. A broker can compare options across a wide panel of lenders and find a structure that fits your situation.
If you are buying through a business, structures like chattel mortgage and finance lease can offer tax advantages. If it is a personal purchase, a secured consumer loan is the most common option.
